If you have difficulty conceiving, try changing your diet. A healthy infertility diet may improve your chances of getting pregnant.
Carbohydrates
Slowly digested carbohydrates have low effect on blood-sugar and insulin levels. Take more whole grains or foods make from whole grains like breakfast cereal and breads. Barley and brown rice are also sources of whole grains. Beans, vegetables and whole fruits have a lot of healthy nutrients. Highly refined carbohydrates stimulate high levels of blood-sugar and insulin and cause ovulation problems.
Take more unsaturated fats that can improve your body's sensitivity to insulin and calm inflammation. Use olive oil or canola oil to cook vegetables, eggs and fish. Instead of butter, use olive oil for breads and rolls. Use nuts and seeds for salad dressings and eat nuts instead of chips. Take more omega-3 from salmon, sardines, tuna, flaxseeds and walnut. Omega-3 fats also help to unclog your arteries. Limit your intake of saturated fats. Our body needs saturated fats but taking too much can be harmful for your heart and arteries. Some sources of saturated fats are corned beef, sausage, bacon, lard, coconut milk, coconut oil, palm oil, whole milk, butter and cheese. Avoid trans fats which produce more bad cholesterol and increase inflammation. Some sources of trans fats are margarines, fast foods, doughnuts and cookies. You can't totally avoid saturated fats and trans fats but try to replace them with unsaturated fats whenever possible.
Proteins
Add nuts to salads, hot cereal and bake cookies with nuts. Take more beans and fish which contains high proteins and less saturated fats. Proteins from meat increase your risk of infertility while proteins from plants improve fertility. Soybean contains a lot of protein, calcium and other good nutrients. While some believe food made from soy may lower cholesterol and prevent breast and prostate cancer, soybeans contains estrogens, too much of which may be detrimental to fertility.
Vitamins
Women should take multivitamin and minerals with folic acid, iron, vitamin A, C, F and B complex, zinc and selenium daily to improve their reproductive health. Folic acid is effective in preventing giving birth to babies with spina bifida or other neural tube defect. Extra folic acid and iron may be able to stimulate ovulation and improve fertility. Men should take folic acid and zinc to improve their sperm quality and quantity.
Vegetables
Avoid taking vegetables with harmful pesticides. If possible, take organic vegetables. Take more cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Cruciferous vegetables helps to regulate usage of estradiol hormone.
Beverages
Replace sugared sodas and juice with water, sparkling water or sugar-free sodas. Drink coffee or tea in moderation. Avoid alcohol or drink only occasionally. Heavy drinking of alcohol can cause infertility in both women and men.
In short, take more whole grains, nuts, beans, vegetables, fruits and deep-sea fish. Stay hydrated with water. Maintain a healthy diet with foods that help to boost fertility. If you are overweight, reduce your intake of calories. If you are underweight, make sure you have enough nutrients. Body weight has an effect on body hormones that affect fertility.
